Roy Blunt: 'Don't Be Fooled by Left Wing Mud-Slinging'

SPRINGFIELD - For months, Robin Carnahan's liberal supporters have subjected Missourians to constant mud-slinging and sleazy Washington, D.C-style politics with their false attacks against Roy Blunt on television and radio. Now her liberal friends are splattering mud in our neighborhoods.

At a news conference in Springfield, Roy Blunt took issue with a false and misleading billboard erected by the left wing group Pro-Vote, which represents ACORN and other liberal organizations that support a government takeover of health care

"Missourians should not be fooled by the constant mudslinging by Robin Carnahan's liberal friends," said Roy Blunt. "Groups like Pro-Vote, ACORN, the SEIU and the League of Conservation Voters are not independent. They are organized and funded by Washington liberals to support left-wing candidates and attack those who oppose their extreme positions on issues like health care and energy.

"Like the previous false attacks, this billboard suggests wrongly that if you do not support a government takeover of health care you are not on the side of the people or health care reform. Missourians have heard this straw man argument many times from Washington. Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Barack Obama claim that if you are not for what they want to do then you are for doing nothing. I am not a defender of the status quo and have offered many health care alternatives to help lower costs by providing more choices, more access and more competition so we can improve health outcomes for every American. But I am deeply concerned about the national Democrats' radical plan to spend one to two trillion dollars on a government takeover of health care that will lead to rationing and shortages."

The misleading ad attacks Roy Blunt for contributions from the insurance industry, but fails to mention that Robin Carnahan has taken more than $10,000 from Washington insurance lobbyists in her campaign for U.S. Senate in just the last few months.

"If these contributions are an issue then my expected opponent ought to explain to Missourians why she has taken more than $10,000 from insurance lobbyists in her Senate campaign," Roy Blunt said. "More importantly, she ought to come out from behind these groups and explain to Missourians why she supports a government takeover of health care. The purpose of these false ads is to intimidate my supporters and those who oppose government-run health care. Unfortunately for Missourians, these liberal groups are just getting started and they should prepare for even more negative and false attacks over the next 14 months. Our campaign believes Missourians are more interested in the truth which is always the best response to a false ad."
