Roy Blunt has "emerged as the leader"

Rep. Roy Blunt has emerged as the leader - the result of thousands of handshakes at local GOP luncheons, a furious fundraising drive and some behind-the-scenes negotiations that racked up endorsements from almost every Republican state officeholder. SPRINGFIELD -- Congressman Roy Blunt announced Thursday that he will run for the Republican Party's nomination for U.S. Senate next year. Blunt will try to replace Sen. Kit Bond, a Republican who announced last month that he won't seek a fifth term.

Blunt said he chose to first announce his candidacy in St. Louis because that's were Republican candidates have been weakest in Missouri in recent elections. Blunt said he hopes to avoid the "slippage" in the number of votes in that area that other Republicans have suffered.

Rep. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) will announce his candidacy for Senate on Thursday, sources close to Blunt have confirmed.

Blunt has been expected to enter the 2010 race for weeks. His candidacy sets up a potential clash of the families in Missouri, as Secretary of State Robin Carnahan has entered the race on the Democratic side.
Carnahan comes from a well-known Democratic family that includes former Gov. Mel Carnahan (D-Mo.)and former Sen. Jean Carnahan (D-Mo.). Blunt’s son, Matt, was the state’s GOP governor until he opted not to run for reelection in 2008.

Blunt, the former House GOP whip, left House leadership recently.

He appears to have much of the Republican establishment behind him, though state Treasurer Sarah Steelman (R) is still considering the race and could make for a competitive primary
