Truth Check: Robin Carnahan Rewarded for Supporting Cap and Tax Bill With More Left-Wing Mudslinging

JEFFERSON CITY - Robin Carnahan sided with left-wing Washington liberals over Missouri families by supporting the cap and trade job-destroying energy tax and is being rewarded once again for her support of higher taxes. In addition to helping finance Robin Carnahan's U.S. Senate campaign, the left-wing organization League of Conservation Voters is airing a third false television ad on her behalf. The misleading ad attacks Roy Blunt for siding with Missouri families against the energy tax.

"What this false ad shows is that Robin Carnahan has sided with Nancy Pelosi and other left-wing liberals in support of the national energy tax," said Blunt spokesperson Rich Chrismer. "Roy Blunt knows Missouri's families are hurting with this terrible economy. That's why he voted against the energy tax that Robin Carnahan supports because it would cause Missourians' home energy prices to skyrocket and destroy jobs our families need."

The misleading ad does not make clear that Roy Blunt voted against the so-called "American Clean Energy and Security Act" because it included a cap and trade energy tax that would hurt Missouri families. The negative ad also fails to note that Roy Blunt supports American clean energy and security with his support for an energy policy that encourages an all-of-the-above approach for affordable American energy. This includes new production of U.S. oil, coal and natural gas in environmentally responsible ways. Roy Blunt supports sensible policies that emphasize greater conservation and investment in alternative fuels and next-generation energy technologies, but not government takeovers and mandates.

The impact of the Robin Carnahan-backed tax on Missouri families and taxpayers would be brutal. One estimate by the Obama Administration showed a cap and trade system could increase energy prices by $1,761 per family. Another study conducted for the Missouri Joint Municipal Electric Utility Commission showed it could increase Missourians'energy bills by as much as 40 percent over five years and 80 percent over ten years. Even President Obama, who supports the tax, has said that it would cause electricity rates to "skyrocket."

Missourians would pay most of this national energy tax as a hidden part of their monthly electric bills, as a new cost passed on by suppliers of electricity. If the Carnahan-job killing energy tax is enacted, everything we buy would cost more. This tax on coal-based utilities would have an especially devastating impact on Missouri where more than 85 percent of our electricity comes from coal.

While Robin Carnahan continues to hide from Missouri voters, left-wing organizations including the League of Conservation Voters, Pro-Vote - which represents ACORN - and other liberal organizations have spent over a half-million dollars in false and negative advertising to benefit her U.S. Senate campaign.
